Pack a Parka

I like the internet. I love all the stuff on it and how it is constantly changing.

I RSS, I follow, I friend, and I surf.

But I have to wonder, why is it still called surfing? I’m done being pushed back to shore. I’m going to call it Sherpa-ing cause it seems to me that we’re all looking for a way up the internet mountain. I want to know the best line to take. Where are the best blogs and the most entertaining videos? And how can I avoid the angry yetis of the internet?

I, for one, still wish I didn’t see certain things on the web; I can never clean my brain of those images. (If you’ve spent any time here I’m sure you have some ideas of what I’m talking about.)

Considering these things, we need to guide one another through this crazy snow covered mountain. Every day new powder falls and the winds cover what once was the best path. Each day is a new journey despite how many times we’ve ventured out there.

Some may step wrong and find those yetis and internet horrors – and they can warn the others – but when they find a great path, they can Sherpa the rest of us along that path to make sure we see the llamas with hats, Charlie biting his brother, our favorite blogs, and even a lolcat or two.

When you think about it, we’re all Sherpas. Bloggers Sherpa along a niche line made for specific people. They found which path on the mountain was best for their clients. But we don’t all have to be specialized, we just have to know what to share and with whom. I constantly get links from friends, family, twitter, etc. — I wouldn’t know half the stuff I do without their Sherpa skills.

So, I’m going to head up the mountain today, just as I did yesterday, and I too will Sherpa people along certain paths. I know not everyone should take the same path, as we all have our skills and likes. So I’ll push on and seek those paths that make the mountain summitable. And I know my fellow Sherpas will help guide my line today as I guide others’.

Sherpa on!
